Virginia gives stakeholders tool to understand the impact of forest cover
Posted on Monday, May 14, 2012The Virginia Department of Forestry has developed an application called InFOREST to enable city and county planners, landowners or anyone interested in understanding how land-cover changes impact nutrient and sediment loading to Virginia streams and rivers.
Although the new application is somewhat advanced and has a learning curve, it was designed to be user friendly. It provides useful information that shows developers how to reduce their pollutant loadings by 50 percent and show counties how to help landowners minimize impacts to drinking water reservoirs.

Department of Interior begins top-down internal review wildland fire programs
Posted on Wednesday, May 9, 2012The United States Department of Interior (DOI) is reviewing of all of its internal wildland fire programs with the goal of identifying duplication of efforts that could be eliminated. The study is required by the House Committee on Appropriations and will help DOI determine the most cost effective and efficient means for implementing the wildland fire management programs.
The U.S. Forest Service is not part of the review, but some aspects of the Forest Service program will be examined to better understand the opportunities within DOI and how those opportunities could potentially affect the their work with the Forest Service.
