USFS Chief and OR State Forester keynote Partners in Community Forestry conference

More than 300 attendees gathered in Portland, OR, recently for the 2009 Partners in Community Forestry National Conference, hosted by the Arbor Day Foundation. This year's event featured presentations on building effective partnerships and growing community involvement, the value of trees in storm water management and energy conservation, as well as models for effectively managing community canopy. Keynote addresses by USDA Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Oregon State Forester Marvin Brown and Oregon Metro President David Bragdon highlighted two days of presentations and tours on urban forest best management practices. October is NeighborWoods Month

National NeighborWoods Month is an annual October celebration to remind us of the value of trees in our communities. Led by the Alliance for Community Trees (ACT), the National NeighborWoods Program supports local partners with training, technical assistance, marketing tools, and project grants to encourage the involvement of volunteers in the hands-on restoration of urban forests. NASF encourages its members and constituents to participate in NeighborWoods month by volunteering, hosting a local event, or donating to help plant trees during October. Bikes help water city trees in DC

Casey Trees, a non-profit dedicated to planting trees in the Washington DC area, recently unveiled a new program to mulch and water trees with custom bikes fitted with trailers. The Water-by-Cycle project is the first of its type in the nation and allows the field crew to water newer trees with specialized care without requiring a parking spot or a van for equipment.

Urban and community forestry funding survey results

The Alliance for Community Trees (ACT) reports on the results of the California ReLeaf project that surveyed all fifty states to identify and explore potential stable funding sources for urban and community forestry. The report reflects the state of funding perceived by Urban and Community Forestry Coordinators from 2007 through 2008. The majority (76%) of those surveyed were pursuing alternatives to federal funding such as increased or diversified state funding and private and nonprofit partnerships.

DOT, HUD and EPA form Partnership for Sustainable Communities

Three federal agencies -- the U.S. Departments of Transportation (DOT) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) -- have created the Partnership for Sustainable Communities to coordinate federal transportation, environmental protection and housing investments. The intiative is based on six "livability principles." Number six, "Value communities and neighborhoods," appears to create opportunities for urban and community forestry investments.
