Two Chiefs’ Partnership Award call for nominations

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the U.S. Forest Service request nominations for their fourth annual Two Chiefs' Partnership Award. The 2009 award is given in two categories, individual and group, to recognize exemplary partnership efforts promoting conservation and forest stewardship. Nominees must have worked jointly to achieve gains in forestry-related conservation with at least two of the following four organizations: conservation districts, NRCS, FS and State forestry agencies. Nominations should be submitted electronically via the Joint Forestry Team website by December 15.

Montana governor seeks regional response to pine beetle epidemic

State Forester Bob Harrington and Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer plan to bring the gravity of the state's pine beetle epidemic before the Western Governor's Association to "help craft a regional response," according to Schweitzer. Getting more support from USDA and Interior for prescriptive logging and increasing pressure on Congress to take action on modernizing the country's energy policy are among the goals.

U.S. pledges $275M for tropical forests in 2010

This week the U.S. committed $275 million to rain forest protection in the Amazon, Congo Basins, South America and Africa. The funds will be awarded from a $1.2 billion assistance allocation for international programs in the 2010 U.S. budget.

Senate hearing looks at role of national forests in climate change

A hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests this week focused on how best to manage federal forests in response to climate change. In his testimony, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said the agency is trying to manage forests to combat climate change while still easing the risk of wildfires that have increased in frequency and intensity, in part because of global warming.

Endowment to host dialogue with conservation thinkers

The U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities has scheduled two webinar sessions as an opportunity to "bubble up" ideas from a diverse set of conservation thinkers for a potential application to the 2010 round of NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service)-CIG (Conservation Innovation Grants) Grant Leveraging Category funding. The Endowment hopes to generate ideas for conservation approaches and new technologies that will provide measurable results on-the-ground to advance forest sustainability and address the needs of rural forest-reliant communities. Disney invests in forest conservation projects

Seeking to help fight climate change, the Walt Disney Co. says it will spend $7 million in partnership with three conservation groups to protect tens of thousands of acres of forest lands in the Congo basin, the Amazon basin and in two regions of the United States. The company will work with the Nature Conservancy and provide $2 million for tree planting on 2,000 acres of former forest lands in the lower Mississippi Valley, and $1 million for the Conservation Fund's forest protection project along California's North Coast.

State and federal forestry partners to develop Montana Joint Forestry Strategic Plan

Five forestry organizations in Montana are joining forces to make it easier for private landowners to tap into their expertise in forestry-related research and science, forest practices policy and in service, education and program delivery. The five partners --- the Montana Department of Natural Resource and Conservation, Forestry Division; the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service; the USDA Forest Service, Northern Region; Montana State University Extension Service; and the Montana Association of Conservation Districts --- have agreed to write a Montana Joint Forestry Strategic Plan by May 2010.

Cogongrass is an invasive weed and fire hazard whose threat to wildlife habitats, timber and agricultural production is worsening by the day, particularly in southern states. According to the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia, the grass grows in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

A $4.6 billion boost for the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service budgets in the 2010 appropriations bill includes a 16% increase for the Forest Service's State and Private Forestry programs. Obama signs bill to help agencies manage skyrocketing wildfire suppression costs

The Federal Land Assistance, Management and Enhancement (FLAME) Act adopted into the Interior appropriations bill was signed this weekend by the President. The measure establishes a new approach to budgeting for costly wildfires by setting up a pair of "FLAME" funds that will act as reserve accounts for the Forest Service and the Department of the Interior to cover the costs of large or complex wildfires when the annual budgets for suppression are exhausted.

NASF responded with a letter the editor of the Washington Times regarding a recent article about the restoration of stimulus funding for green jobs programs in the District of Columbia. "The work of state forestry agencies - including the D.C. Urban Forestry Administration - is an opportune vehicle to deploy federal funds and put Americans to work tackling the health and management needs of our nation's trees and forests," wrote NASF president and Maryland State Forester Steven Koehn. "When all the stimulus money has been spent, forestry-related jobs will have made an important contribution to the nation's economic recovery."
